The Fair Credit Reporting Act
Your Legal Right to Tell Credit Bureaus “Fix This Mess!”
Let’s be honest - your credit report probably has at least one thing on it that makes you squint and say, “Now who told them THAT?”
Luckily, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) exists, which basically gives you permission to tell the credit bureau “Hey, that’s wrong. FIX IT!” And they can’t just laugh at you. They legally have to investigate it.
What the FCRA Does
In normal language, the FCRA states that:
Credit bureaus must report accurate info.
EVERYTHING on your credit report can be disputed.
Upon receiving your dispute, they have to investigate.
They have a strict amount of time to conduct an investigation.
If they are unable to verify the disputed items, they legally have to remove it.
It’s the closest thing to magic the government has ever given us.
What You Can Dispute
Short answer:
Anything
Long answer:
Seriously….. ANYTHING
If it’s wrong, outdated, questionable, or looks like it was typed by someone who was half asleep, you can dispute it.
How to Dispute Stuff
Disputing items on your credit is easy. It can be done online, by phone, or by mail. However, for best results, and the highest chance of removal then I highly recommend using the Mail. The mail gives you a physical record of your dispute, and it sends your dispute directly to the main offices of the credit bureaus.
You don’t need anything special for the dispute itself, just a simple written letter will do. A couple simple sentences stating your full name, the items you are disputing, why, and include your SSN.
